Q&A with our Art Director, Claire-Ellen Dath

What's your role and what does your average day look like?

I work as a freelance art director, graphic designer and account manager across brands within TLSE. An average day at the moment is anything from client meetings, to coming up with new ideas and ways of elevating brand content to the actual creation phase where all the magic happens!

How long have you been working for TLSE? Why do you love it?

I have worked with TLSE for a year and a half now. This role has changed with me over time - from working full time in the office to now being a contracted freelancer. I love the transition I have had and the flexibility TLSE has allowed for. The focus has always been on creating strong visual languages for clients and being able to do so with full autonomy has always ignited a strong sense of purpose and pride in the work that we do. For me, working alongside the women on the team who are all so incredibly gifted, passionate, smart and beyond-capable humans makes the job all that much more rewarding.

Where do you get inspiration for your work?

If I'm computer bound, call it cliché but Instagram and Pinterest are never short of inspiration. I save anything I come across into specific folders I have created, which I go through daily for inspiration. If I'm able to leave the desk, then spending time in vintage stores that stock books has also always been a part of my practice - spending the time to go through these leaves me refreshed and able to tackle any creative blocks. Taking notice of branding around me, collecting business cards, stepping away from the busy grind and spending weekends away amongst nature, visiting galleries. All of these combined are necessary to keep the creative juices flowing.

Other than TLSE, which are your top 3 favourite Instagram accounts, and what do you love about them?

1. @herclique

A great account celebrating a range of women artists from around the world. A nice source of inspiration and a great way to keep up to date with emerging female artists.

2. @viceau and/or @viceworldnews

An account that helps me feel up to date with what's happening around the world

An LA-based book store featuring unique book recommendations and finds. Always my go-to when I'm stuck on what to read next.

Describe yourself in 5 words.

Creative, approachable, carefree, hard-working and open-minded.

Where are you planning on travelling to next and why?

I would be overjoyed with a trip to Mexico, I have a friend who moved there earlier in the year and I would love to go visit her and see Mexico from a less touristic lens. And tacos, of course. Oh and tequila.

If you had to give up the beach or art, which would it be?

This question is too big of an ultimatum for a Monday morning, I feel very triggered. If I give up the beach, in retrospect, my art practice would likely benefit from the utter depression I'd find myself in. I need both to function like a normal human being.

Thanks CE!
